David jones sydney … spring flowers spring fashion

/images/david_jones_flowers_1.jpg

What a spectacular entrance to this annual event at David Jones, Sydney. I love the reference to the spring fashion direction with their theme ‘fleuressence’.

Having said that … I am not sure that I can embrace the whole fleuro fashion statement … maybe a scarf.

/images/david_jones_flowers_4.jpg

However … the idea of bringing fleuro into the home as summer approaches is a fun concept.  It need only be a vibrant cushion, vase, platter, towels or flowers !!

Each year, the ground floor of David Jones is transformed into a floral fantasy for the start of Spring. I have such fond memories of the trip into the city with the express purpose of viewing the ‘David Jones Spring Flowers’ and can’t recall ever being disappointed.

Sydney boutique hotel … style and location

/images/harbour_rocks.jpg

For some time I have tried in vain to find somewhere super stylish for overseas friends and colleagues to stay while in Sydney.  I have written about so many gorgeous places in the Uk and Europe but struggled to find anywhere in Sydney that excites.  That was until I was taken by a friend to see the Harbour Rocks Hotel, tucked away, yet right in the heart of Sydney’s historic Rocks precinct.

/images/harbour_rocks_lobby.jpg

This is one of the early buildings in the Rocks …. possibly one of the many bond stores.  The architects and designers have captured the feel with exposed sandstone, bricks, and beams …. the entrance sets the scene. Set back from the street one enters through large black doors …. what awaits is more stylish than could be imagined.  The lighting, the bookshelves and the gorgeous Gervasoni seating in the Lobby give one the feeling that they have arrived somewhere quite special.

/images/harbour_rocks_bar_reception.jpg

Reception is discreet …. in fact it is an extension of the Bar.  I think what works so beautifully is the scale of the spaces.  These spaces and finishes have an inherent warmth and glow … all so very inviting.

/images/harbour_rocks_guestroom.jpg

Guestrooms are simple and elegant, yet cosy. The finishes and furniture stylish. Yes, it is the attention to detail that you don’t find large hotels.

/images/harbour_rocks_restaurant_2.jpg

This restaurant is beautiful !!!!  The lighting is perfect. The clean and simple lines of these chairs and texture of the banquette seating …. a lovely juxtaposition with the sandstone.

I guess it was always going to be easy once you inherit the bones of this magnificent building.  Not so easy to get it this right and they have.

I will certainly be finding an excuse to book in for a weekend.  The location is a gem and I look forward to exploring the Rocks (not just for tourists now), spending time at the Museum of Contemporary Art, walking round to the Opera Bar to enjoy the sunset and a glass of prosecco and trying some of the many fabulous new restaurants and coffee shops in this part of the world.

Campo marzio …. a little touch of rome in sydney

/images/campo_marzio_1.jpg

The history …..

in 1933 an anonymous Roman craftsman carries out his work in the heart of Rome

after the second world war the quality and skill of the campo marzio bottega becomes well known in Rome

in 1930 Italians are invited by the fascist government to donate their gold to their country to finance their country’s entrance into the war … gold disappears from pens

the problem is solved by Italian craftsmen creating pens with nibs built in murano glass … Campo Marzio has an example of these gems in its collection of vintage pens today

war forces the shop to the Prati neighbourhood and the market is transformed by the ballpoint pen

Campo Marzio survives the industrialization of the 60’s and 70’s

during the 80’s it moves to the Corso Vittorio Emanuele

in the 90’s it moves back to the Via di Campo Marzio joining the great Italian and international fashion brands … their name becomes their ‘brand’ expanding to every corner of the globe

it’s success and uniqueness of concept was recognized on the occasion of the Jubilee of the Roman Church in the Year 2000 producing a special collection of rare and precious fountain pens for the Vatican

the brand represents quality writing instruments, business accessories and leather items with a rare collection of unique fountain pen models collected over many years.

This is a success story, or a story of survival … so interesting yet rather poignant !!

Think exquisite quality, colour, style and a little bit of fun.  The shop in the Queen Victoria Building is a find and I have it in my little black book !!

Vivid sydney …… magical !!

/images/vivid_sydney_1.jpg

The atmosphere by 6pm was one of anticipation with the harbour foreshore between Circular Quay and the Opera House lined with photographers …. professional and amateur …. all waiting for the light show to begin.  The haunting music began and the lights slowly lit up the city buildings, the museum of contemporary art and the opera house.  There was hushed silence as people watched and waited for what was to come next …. quite different to the partying and revelry of New Years Eve fireworks.  This was gorgeous, stylish, creative and sophisticated.   There are simply not enough superlatives to describe it …. and that is just one location …. there are many.

/images/vivid_sydney_2.jpg

I couldn’t help but think how children would adore both the light show and the many “light artworks” …. there are over 60 light installations covering the harbour foreshore around to Walsh Bay.  The night markets and Rocks Precinct is my next stop but really can’t wait to get to the Opera Bar on a Friday night during Vivid Sydney for a glass of Prosecco and …. I am told fabulous music.

Sydney skyline at night from the mca

/images/mca_rooftop_at_night.jpg

The last time I was at Sydney’s MCA it was a sparkling Autumn day and the view from the rooftop cafe took my breathe away ….. I couldn’t draw my eyes away from the expanse of blue sky, blue water and the Opera House sails …. so pristine and so white !!

Attending a function one evening this week …. in the same space …… I was surprised by what little impact the Opera House and possibly even the Sydney Harbour Bridge had on the skyline. It was the sparkling view back to the CBD and Circular Quay itself that this time …… literally took my breath away.  Even the Cahill Expressway was barely evident.

/images/mca_rooftop_at_night_2.jpg

The lights around the foreshore and wharves as pretty and lustrous as strings of pearls.

/images/mca_fountain_sculpture.jpg

I do have to mention the impact of the beautifully lit Hany Armanious sculpture …. Fountain, by night. He was our only exhibitor in the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011.

Laneway art and about

/images/laneway_art.jpg

Sydney’s Art and About finishes on 31 January.  It is rather exciting when in the city to stumble across one of the many Laneway Installations….the works of australian and overseas artists and designers.

This looked particularly spectacular at night tucked in behind the Ivy off George Street.

Masses of silvery mesh ‘birdcages’ almost like lanterns.

These installations are dotted in laneways throughout the CBD…..so it is definitely worth looking at the website to plot your course……and discover some of the fabulous innercity wine bars for a glass of Prosecco along the way !!
