Campo marzio …. a little touch of rome in sydney

/images/campo_marzio_1.jpg

The history …..

in 1933 an anonymous Roman craftsman carries out his work in the heart of Rome

after the second world war the quality and skill of the campo marzio bottega becomes well known in Rome

in 1930 Italians are invited by the fascist government to donate their gold to their country to finance their country’s entrance into the war … gold disappears from pens

the problem is solved by Italian craftsmen creating pens with nibs built in murano glass … Campo Marzio has an example of these gems in its collection of vintage pens today

war forces the shop to the Prati neighbourhood and the market is transformed by the ballpoint pen

Campo Marzio survives the industrialization of the 60’s and 70’s

during the 80’s it moves to the Corso Vittorio Emanuele

in the 90’s it moves back to the Via di Campo Marzio joining the great Italian and international fashion brands … their name becomes their ‘brand’ expanding to every corner of the globe

it’s success and uniqueness of concept was recognized on the occasion of the Jubilee of the Roman Church in the Year 2000 producing a special collection of rare and precious fountain pens for the Vatican

the brand represents quality writing instruments, business accessories and leather items with a rare collection of unique fountain pen models collected over many years.

This is a success story, or a story of survival … so interesting yet rather poignant !!

Think exquisite quality, colour, style and a little bit of fun.  The shop in the Queen Victoria Building is a find and I have it in my little black book !!

Tips for organizing your home office

/images/semikolon_document_folder.jpg

The time has come to reorganize my working space so that it not only functions more effectively but is inviting to spend time in.  I am particularly lucky to have taken over the room with the best view of our garden!! I overlook magnificent 80 year old maples and elms which I expect any day will start to turn for autumn and put on the usual spectacular display of colour.

I have to say that I do relish the thought of those bookshelves full of coordinating files and binders…..magazines perfectly filed in date order….you have the picture!!

However before I get to the fun bit there are certain tasks which I guess take priority –

create a clean space to work on by filing into binders, storage boxes or magazine holders any superfluous documents, stationary, pens, pencils etc

simple document trays allow you to keep in sight current items that you are dealing with, working on or referring to

if you are a visual person, a white board or planner would be helpful on a nearby wall beside or in front of your work space

assess whether additional shelving is necessary…those piles on the floor just don’t work

if your desk chair isn’t as good as it could be now is the time to start looking and trying out new ones…..you spend a lot of your day in this chair so it isn’t worth creating posture problems

good lighting is essential and task lighting is easily introduced with an adjustable lamp

Now is the time to head off to buy those gorgeous binders and boxes…..try    Kikki K, or the gorgeous Semikolon stationary.  Filing can be fun if you have all the appropriate tools.

An ordered and calm space can only inspire creative thinking!!!

Emma bridgewater hearts on valentines day

/images/emma_bridgwater_mug.jpg

It is worth a trip to London to stock up on Emma Bridgewater hand made pottery ……I spend hours in her shops in London.  Her glass is also particularly beautiful so very difficult to choose.

My friend Annabel in London has absolutely loads of it all which we admire……gorgeous when mixed and matched.  Somehow all the designs and colours do work together.

The clever thing is that the Emma Bridgewater mugs are not too big and still seem elegant…maybe that is an English thing…..all those tea parties etc.

On it goes with bedlinen, fabulous coated fabric, stationary, cutlery and tin…..

and her sales and seconds are amazing !!!

Our only problem is that the cost of freight is prohibitive……so do what I do and load up friends and family on their return to Australia.

Kikki k daily notepad coming soon…..not soon enough

This little notepad is perfect ….. my current notebook looks like a mass of scribble by lunchtime….even I can’t read what I have written. I then spend time rewriting my lists into categories!!!

These categories just make sense……daily appointments, top 3 prioities, to do, water intake, tonights dinner, for tomorrow and what I am thankful for !!!

What I love is having an overview of your day at a glance.
