This fabric works perfectly in a neutral scheme .. a punch of colour for cushions on string coloured linen sofas ... or as lavish curtains.

/images/manual_canovas_8.jpg

Note the hint of lime.  Fabulous cushions for a lime sofa !!

This elegant paisley is a statement.  Look how well the pattern and stripe work with it.

/images/manuel_canovas_5.jpg

A fabric which works beautifully on a feature piece of furniture or on mass as upholstered wall fabric.  Perfect in a charcoal room or with pristine white.

The supplier of Manuel Canovas fabric is Colefax and Fowler

lighting dank street ... my edit

Deirdre Brennan - Sunday, June 29, 2014

So exciting to receive news of the arrival of Parterre Garden to Dank Street. Such an appropriate addition to this well known strip in Sydney's Waterloo.

/images/parterre_garden_lamp.jpg

Over the years I have made a practice of visiting Parterre Garden regularly to keep up with new shipments. Almost always it is the lighting that I fall in love with ... either a stunning table lamp or chandelier. This is some of my favourite lighting from Parterre at the moment.

/images/parterre_garden_chandelier.jpg

I feel each works equally well in either a contemporary or classic setting. The gorgeous french wool basket lampshade at top, is from The Country Trader just around the corner.  Parterre is in very good company.

Such are the advantages of owners who travel, source and choose the very best on offer... these gems often requiring extensive refurbishment/reconfiguration to bring them to their finest.

indigo ... the colour everyone is talking about

Deirdre Brennan - Thursday, June 12, 2014
/images/pottery_barn_furniture_2.jpg

The colour indigo conjures up images of either the night sky or deepest ocean.
Indigo is a colour that is tranquil. It is not just blue ... indigo is a particular shade of blue ... it is sophisticated.

/images/pottery_barn_bedding.jpg

The most exciting thing about this colour is how easy it is to work with. Indigo brings to life any shade of timber from the rich and golden tones to the bleached and lime washed.

/images/william_yeoward_plates.jpg

Indigo is at its most sophisticated when paired with chocolate brown, tan or bronze.

/images/william_yeoward_furniture_1.jpg

It goes without saying that the combination of Indigo with .. crisp white .. rich cream .. soft dove grey or cappuccino shades, is perfect no matter what the season.

/images/william_yeoward_fabric.jpg

Introduce indigo into any room that takes your fancy.  Pottery Barn have embraced indigo this season as has William Yeoward with his latest furnishing collection.

designex14 ... fabulous lighting, brilliant design

Deirdre Brennan - Friday, May 30, 2014
images/designex14_lighting_3.jpg

What a surprise packet Designex14 turned out to be.  A new location to navigate (while Darling Harbour Convention Centre is being redeveloped) caused no hardship.  Glebe Island with easy parking and smart temporary buildings was more inviting by far than the tired Darling Harbour venue we were accustomed to.

/graphics/designex_lighting_5.jpg

The diversity of both exhibitors and products was impressive and all with exciting new products to launch. The latest lighting was exceptional. A clever floorplan enhanced the design experience, with fabulous cafes and pop up bars adding to the buzz !!

/images/designex14_lighting_6.jpg

I have come away inspired ... as well as having a bag full of new contacts and new product brochures. It is easy to find a reason not to visit Design Fairs however Designex14 with all it had to offer under the one roof, was worth well worth the time.

Another stylish soiree at Becker Minty on Wednesday evening with the opening of the exhibition of Felix Forest Photography.  The opulence of the store a perfect setting for his photographs (a curated collection by Becker Minty) which sparkled amongst elegant homewares, jewels and fashion.

/images/felix_forest_photography_2.jpg

Felix has photographed interiors around the world for private clients and magazines. This exhibition is showing throughout April at Becker Minty.  Photographs are available in varying sizes and framed or unframed ... they are beautiful !!

balmoral boatshed ... casual sydney cafe style at its best

Deirdre Brennan - Saturday, June 15, 2013

/images/balmoral_boatshed_2.jpg

As they suggest, pop in with sand between your toes or slip into your Gucci loafers, it doesn't get much more chilled than this.  The setting ... divine, and the venue ... oh so stylish.  This is Sydney living at its best.

/images/balmoral_boatshed_3.jpg

Not sure how one would describe the design concept ... nautical ... beach club with a touch of the luscious tropics ... it just works !!

For a similar treat a little further afield visit The Boathouse Palm Beach ... same cute concept, same clever operators.

10 favourites from 'design and decoration 2013' sydney

Deirdre Brennan - Saturday, February 09, 2013

/images/dd_1.jpg

I was daunted at the thought of visiting Design and Decoration at Darling Harbour this week.  This is the trade only exhibition which showcases the latest and greatest in design.  One is usually confronted with a lot of not so good, to be sieved through in the hope of finding the gems.  Not so this year ... not nearly as many exhibitors but lots of new and fabulous.  I have to say my favourite stand was the one above .. well done Crowley and Grouch.

/images/dd_2.jpg

I fell upon this fabric supplier who exhibited the most beautiful range of linen fabrics, both printed and plains ... from Sth. Africa.

/images/dd_3.jpg

This furniture was extremely stylish, the designs just that little bit different ... such generous proportions.  I do love stud trim on any piece of furniture !!

/images/dd_4.jpg

Excuse the out of focus images, however I was really on the run.  Love both the ikat cushions, colours and the metal furniture very different to anything I have seen.

/images/dd_5.jpg

I first saw and loved similar lamps at Blakes Hotel in London in the late 80's. I have been trying to source or have made, this style for years ... very difficult to get the proportion just right, but here they are.

/images/dd_6.jpg

Yes, new industrial style furniture is here to stay ... and I am dying to use it somewhere.

/images/dd_61.jpg

Loved these lights.  In fact the lighting was the standout of the event this year.

/images/dd_7.jpg

This very glamorous African tribal look was rather inspirational !!

/images/dd_8.jpg

Have wanted groupings of this classic wicker on our verandah (to be moved out into the garden for autumn lunches) for years but never time to make it happen !!  This was so reasonably priced that I wondered why I hadn't just got on with it.

/images/dd_9.jpg

For those of you who read my blog on peacock bedheads, you will be amused to see that I have found another supplier.  This colourfully painted (to order) cane furniture was divine .. particularly the oriental style bookshelves. I do have a soft spot for the classic cane armchair and ottoman in the foreground.

marimekko ... all the fun and colour of summer

Deirdre Brennan - Thursday, January 10, 2013

/images/marimekko_1.jpg

I have such fond memories of my marimekko curtains and bedspread, back in the day ... it was the 70's of course.  They were fabulous shades of bright green with large orange tulips.  The look extended  to green heart sheets and a gorgeous white peacock bedhead ... all put together by my very stylish mother.

/images/marimekko_2.jpg

Brisbane was all the richer for Joy de Gruchy and The Craftsman's Market, a design studio that stocked Marimekko and put Brisbane on the map. I have adored Marimekko in a nostalgic sort of way ever since.

/images/marimekko_4.jpg

How exciting to have our own Marimekko in Sydney ... looking resplendent in the wonderful store in King Street. The colour is breathtaking and the space full of light !! Bolts of signature marimekko fabric, fashion and homewares.

/images/marimekko_5.jpg

I couldn't help but pass on my source for peacock bedheads to complete the picture ... The Family Love Tree.

sydney embraces christmas

Deirdre Brennan - Monday, December 24, 2012

/images/Christmas_doors_3.jpg

Love the red berries with the front door colour.

/images/christmas_doors_5.jpg

Interesting wreath .. and with the stone shades surrounding.

/images/christmas_doors_2.jpg

The warmth of the gold tones.

/images/christmas_doors_4.jpg

Oh so elegant.

/images/christmas_doors_1.jpg

Why not have some fun !!

parterre garden chandeliers and other pretty things for christmas

Deirdre Brennan - Monday, December 10, 2012

/images/parterre_1.jpg

Parterre Garden is celebrating 25 years in the business of bringing beautiful pieces large and small for house and garden into our lives.  The shop is exquisite.  Always another shipment arriving ... always another piece to fall in love with.

/images/parterre_2.jpg

There is something rather festive about chandeliers. I adore the ones with the small shades and am always drawn to these first. Just when one is giving thought to dressing the house and table for Christmas ... oh for a pair of these.  Perfect for the Christmas table ... along with your finest silver, glassware and china.

/images/parterre%20_3.jpg

I imagine garlands and wreaths ... white hydrangeas and creamy gardenias.

More of this to come ... but we do have our tree up, looking resplendent, so that is a start.
