Detail Hermes Silk Fabric

As you can imagine, everyone is talking Milan and the Salone del Mobile Furniture Fair at this time of year.  My inbox is flooded with many versions of the pieces and the designers that have supposedly stolen the show. These are the pieces that stood out for me.

The glamour of this drinks cabinet defies belief.

Wonderfully over the top ... as one would expect.

Never before have Hermes ventured into lighting but here it is, a small and perfect collection.

Philippe Starck Folding Chair

I simply love this chair for it's extremely slick take on a very casual piece of furniture ... not to mention the unimaginable quality of the tan leather.

So interesting, the number of fashion houses doing furniture and homewares.

milan furniture fair meets fashion week australia

Deirdre Brennan - Monday, April 15, 2013

/images/milan_missoni.jpg

I was spoilt for choice this week not knowing which to look at first ... the Vogue blog covering Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia or the Vogue Living report each day from the Milan Furniture Fair.

/images/mbfwa_1.jpg

I was definitely more interested in Fashion Week's Street Style than endless images from the catwalk !

/images/paola_lenti_2.jpg

Meanwhile in Milan, my favourites included Missoni (top photo) combining daisies and its traditional zigzag (only seen on the ottoman on the left) and above, the fabulous brights from designer Paola Lenti.

/images/mbfwa_2.jpg

It was all happening at Carriageworks in Sydney ... what a fabulous venue for Fashion Week (yes, with the exception of the parking).

More of Paola Lenti's collection 'In the Key of Colour'. The furniture is available through Dedece, Sydney.

Paola Lenti chose this fabulous Franciscan Monastery, complete with orchard and gardens, for the showing of their collection in Milan.

ilse collection for georg jensen launched milan 2012

Deirdre Brennan - Monday, May 07, 2012

Designer Ilse Crawford's collection for Georg Jensen comprises a set of universal objects that frame simple daily acts. Studioilse's design starts with the human being at the centre. The video attached to her 'website in the making' is beautiful and shows the pieces above .... in her own words "design can influence the way we behave and feel."

/images/studioilse_2.jpg

Because I love her design so much .... I do try to keep an eye out for her latest projects. Her interiors for Soho House which originated in London and included High Road House, Chiswick and Babington House amongst others .... were to me ....perfect !! ....pared back, yet glamorous .... so different to anything else being done in London at the time.

Such a success Soho House now has a much larger network.

/images/studioilse_1.jpg

Her latest is the Ett Hem Hotel in Stockholm, due to open about now. The above two photos are a little preview.  Designed with the feel of staying in someone's private home ..... a feeling not many hotels manage to achieve or even set out to achieve.  Personally it is my only criteria when selecting a hotel to stay in.  I really don't want to feel as if I am staying in a hotel at all.

Ilse Crawford's pet hotel hate is more about how the hotel is run.....if they are unloved by the staff....whether the lighting levels are right !!  I can definitely relate to that.  I may have said this before but I can never bear to go back once the doors of a hotel open .... at least one I have worked on.

the milan furniture fair

As part of Salone del Mobile 2012 (or the  Milan Furniture Fair), Danish fabric house Kvadrat,  invited seven curators from around the world to nominate a design talent from their area ..... to create a new piece using their fabric. These pieces are some of my favourites ... the hammock, coffee table and giant animal cushions .... showcasing the design itself ..... the classic fabric .... and of course the colour palette !!

This exhibition was a focal point with its iconic woollen upholstery fabric relaunched in 58 colours !!

This beautiful fabric has been used and loved by designers around the world since 1968 when it was first produced by Kvadrat. It was designed by the very talented Nanna Ditzel.

mercedes benz furniture launched in milan

Deirdre Brennan - Friday, April 20, 2012

/images/mercedes_benz_furniture.jpg

Really not sure about the range of Mercedes Benz furniture....their first !!!!

It is being launched as we speak at the Milan Furniture Fair.

/images/mercedes_benz_furniture_2.jpg

In their own words they are describing it as dynamic, futuristic and having nice form and lines......and I am sure the ergonomics are brilliant, however it really just doesn't look terribly comfortable.

Perhaps, the statement piece in a Mercedes Benz showroom or state of the art harbourside apartment !!

The collection comprises chairs, chaise lounge, dining table, shelf for the home theatre system, drawers and bed.

No doubt the quality is impeccable, however I suspect the prices may be approaching that of the smaller cars in the range.

Food for thought.....I don't think so.
