rustic kitchens with style

Deirdre Brennan - Sunday, July 12, 2015

I am not sure if it is the marble/stone itself or the soft colour palette of the finishes in these kitchens but they do seem to all have a similar look and feel.  It is very much the look and feel that I love.

/images/rustic_kitchens_2.jpg

It is rustic, yet somehow of the moment. It exudes warmth as well as simply loads of style !!!

/images/rustic_kitchens_3.jpg

The brass detail for this suspended shelving compliments the brass tap ware perfectly .. rustic elegance !!

/images/rustic_kitchens_4.jpg

Super rustic .. and super slick.  What a fabulous combination.  The soft wash of light on the stone above is beautiful. I must say I do love a stylish table lamp in the kitchen. It softens what is often a harshly lit utility area and turns it instead into somewhere that is inviting to spend time in. This works particularly well in an open plan kitchen/family room situation.

Perfect for washing those pots and pans ... sheer genius.

designers guild .... trimmings and tiebacks

It's all in the finishing touch .... the detail, the icing on the cake. Who could resist when you have trimmings as gorgeous as these from Designers Guild to play with.  They are as enticing as candy.

Be brave .... start with trims on cushions.  It is a way of pulling together various elements in a room into a coherent scheme. By picking up the curtain colour in choice of trims on cushions, for example, you immediately bring it all together.  Choose curtain tiebacks that incorporate the shades in upholstery.

Trims can certainly add a touch of glamour however can also be frivolous and fun.  Who doesn't love a bit of old fashioned bobble fringe !!

the winter home with ralph lauren

Deirdre Brennan - Tuesday, June 05, 2012

/images/ralph_lauren_home_1.jpg

Winter is well and truly here if today is anything to go by. Temperatures have plummeted .... days are short .... and there is no place like a cosy home .... even better, with a glowing fire.

/images/ralph_lauren_home_2.png

Home in winter means baskets of freshly cut wood and pine cones gathered on walks .... bowls of apples and pears .... the texture of wool, cashmere, corduroy, velvets and knits .... tartan throw rugs to curl up with or simply add warmth to the mood of the room.

/images/ralph_lauren_home_23.jpg

When the weather is bleak enjoy time in the kitchen cooking up a storm .... indulge in the odd hot chocolate .... enjoy the scents of winter with collections of candles. A bare branch in a vase will compliment the more wintry tones .... bowls of camellias, a welcome splash of colour.

/images/ralph_lauren_home_3.jpg

Ralph Lauren does wintry textured fabrics so well .... and they are available here. Remember a neutral palette allows for seasonal change .... much like the layering up we do with fashion !!

a little inspiration from chanel during australian fashion week

Deirdre Brennan - Tuesday, May 08, 2012

/images/chanel_spring_%202012_13.jpg

As fabulous as many of the designs were during Australian Fashion Week .... and I am thinking Zimmerman and Toni Maticevski who I particularly admired, nothing came close to the sort of detailing that Chanel is famous for.

I love these textures and fabrics and colours !! and just when I thought the beautiful shade of nude was on its way out. I love working with these gorgeous neutral shades for upholstery whether it be wools, flannels, mohair, linen or velvet ... and on whatever style or period of furniture.

Antiques can be modernized and reinvented by upholstering in neutral textiles.

Natural and neutral tones for textiles and rugs work as a backdrop for the warmth of timber furniture, flooring and even subtle architectural detail.  These interiors being both harmonious and .... inviting to live in.

louis vuitton fall/winter 2012 by the sartorialist.....such inspiration.

/images/louis_vuitton_fall_winter_2012.jpg

I am not sure which is more delectable.....the fabrics....the luggage.....the ambience of the orient express or the sheer opulence.

This show was the most fabulous of them all.....by all accounts.

I can envisage these fabrics on a very luxurious buttoned sofa...so very european.

These colours are so rich......jewel-like.  A hint of velvet and fur is always heavenly !!

I have spoken of my love of a navy and black combination...so chic, however navy and chocolate is not only rich but warm and exotic !!

How clever the LV team is.

tips for organizing your home office

Deirdre Brennan - Tuesday, March 27, 2012

/images/semikolon_document_folder.jpg

The time has come to reorganize my working space so that it not only functions more effectively but is inviting to spend time in.  I am particularly lucky to have taken over the room with the best view of our garden!! I overlook magnificent 80 year old maples and elms which I expect any day will start to turn for autumn and put on the usual spectacular display of colour.

I have to say that I do relish the thought of those bookshelves full of coordinating files and binders.....magazines perfectly filed in date order....you have the picture!!

However before I get to the fun bit there are certain tasks which I guess take priority -

create a clean space to work on by filing into binders, storage boxes or magazine holders any superfluous documents, stationary, pens, pencils etc

simple document trays allow you to keep in sight current items that you are dealing with, working on or referring to

if you are a visual person, a white board or planner would be helpful on a nearby wall beside or in front of your work space

assess whether additional shelving is necessary...those piles on the floor just don't work

if your desk chair isn't as good as it could be now is the time to start looking and trying out new ones.....you spend a lot of your day in this chair so it isn't worth creating posture problems

good lighting is essential and task lighting is easily introduced with an adjustable lamp

/images/semikolon_desk.jpg

Now is the time to head off to buy those gorgeous binders and boxes.....try    Kikki K, or the gorgeous Semikolon stationary.  Filing can be fun if you have all the appropriate tools.

An ordered and calm space can only inspire creative thinking!!!

the latest design hunt by habitus living magazine

Deirdre Brennan - Sunday, March 11, 2012

/images/annawili_highfield_owl.jpg

As I glanced at my Habitus Living magazine March edition (online) I was particularly interested in the interview with interior stylist and author Sibella Court.

Sibella's design favourites included the Sydney artist Anna-Wili Highfield, making wonderful paper sculptures of all manner of animals but predominantly birds and horses. Her impressive client list includes no other than Hermes who commissioned a series of majestic horse masks.

It is worth also looking at her sculptures made with copper piping....quite amazing the movement she captures.

/images/annawili_highfield_hermes_%20horse.jpg

Without doubt my favourite of her paper birds is the owl in flight.  This may have something to do with the fact that we have a beautiful large white owl that visits our Southern Highlands garden at a certain time of the year .....sadly not every year.

For those of you that don't know Sibella Court....she has a very interesting shop in Paddington and can be best described as being all about collecting and styling.....positively everything in sight.

Her books Etcetera and Nomad showcase her talent beautifully....showing how to display your very own possessions and collections with style.  In the case of Nomad she works with the treasures and memories you have acquired while travelling.....so much better than poking them into a cupboard somewhere....the memories gone with them.

the elegance of neutral bathrooms

Deirdre Brennan - Thursday, March 08, 2012

/images/bathroom_1.jpg

The simplicity of this bathroom is very appealing.  I am loving the neutral tones and finishes.....classic and elegant.

/images/bathroom_2.jpg

Let the accessories tell the story and create the feel and mood.....what ever that may be.  Bring in texture, warmth and contrast.

/images/bathroom_3.jpg

Natural materials have a natural warmth and texture and require little else. They provide their own contrast and variation within the material itself.

/images/bathroom_5.jpg

Slick and contemporary or rustic and earthy .... neutral works best.

The White Company London stocks the most fabulous range of everything one needs for the bathroom....online.
