Latest Stylish Hotel Design in Madrid

Deirdre Brennan - Tuesday, June 23, 2015

The Principal Madrid,
the latest five star hotel to successfully combine classic architecture with stylish, contemporary interiors ... the result being pure luxury.

/images/The _Principal_Madrid_3.jpg

A club like feel with dark and moody interiors, edgy wing backs and back lit bookcases.
So inviting ... so unlike a hotel !!

/images/The _Principal_Madrid_4.jpg

Fabulous period detailing, high ceilings and large windows contribute to the luxurious ambiance.
Intimate spaces .. far from the madding crowd.

Guestooms are a perfect combination of glamorous Parisian style french doors with iron balustrades, and sleek, contemporary, almost masculine furnishings. The classic butterfly chair in leather and up to the minute designer lighting of course add to the elegance.

So simple yet so right !!

Designer: Pillar Garcia-Nieto and Barcelona based studio Luzio.

the como hotel, melbourne ... so elegantly refurbished

Deirdre Brennan - Tuesday, December 04, 2012

/images/como_melbourne.jpg

While recharging the batteries last week with a week at the beach, I had the luxury of both starting a new book and devouring as many magazines as I could get my hands on.  Fuelled with inspiration and ideas to share, I was then promptly stopped in my tracks ... technical problems ... the blog was clearly not going to happen from up there.  After my initial melt down, I came to the conclusion that it was probably a good thing and maybe I was meant to actually have a holiday.

Anyhow, here I am in my new laid back state of mind ... sharing with you some of what caught my eye as I perused.  The Como Hotel in Melbourne (boutique hotel in Sth Yarra)has been slowly and quietly, with doors still open, refurbishing.  Very much of the moment,  this unusual combination of colours is elegant and very clever.  I have always loved chocolate brown with duck egg blue and aubergine ... but oh that punch of citrus is gorgeous !!

Pure indulgence !!

PS. I think there is something quite luxurious about these deeply buttoned ottomans.

ilse collection for georg jensen launched milan 2012

Deirdre Brennan - Monday, May 07, 2012

Designer Ilse Crawford's collection for Georg Jensen comprises a set of universal objects that frame simple daily acts. Studioilse's design starts with the human being at the centre. The video attached to her 'website in the making' is beautiful and shows the pieces above .... in her own words "design can influence the way we behave and feel."

/images/studioilse_2.jpg

Because I love her design so much .... I do try to keep an eye out for her latest projects. Her interiors for Soho House which originated in London and included High Road House, Chiswick and Babington House amongst others .... were to me ....perfect !! ....pared back, yet glamorous .... so different to anything else being done in London at the time.

Such a success Soho House now has a much larger network.

/images/studioilse_1.jpg

Her latest is the Ett Hem Hotel in Stockholm, due to open about now. The above two photos are a little preview.  Designed with the feel of staying in someone's private home ..... a feeling not many hotels manage to achieve or even set out to achieve.  Personally it is my only criteria when selecting a hotel to stay in.  I really don't want to feel as if I am staying in a hotel at all.

Ilse Crawford's pet hotel hate is more about how the hotel is run.....if they are unloved by the staff....whether the lighting levels are right !!  I can definitely relate to that.  I may have said this before but I can never bear to go back once the doors of a hotel open .... at least one I have worked on.

where it's at......hotel 27, copenhagen

Deirdre Brennan - Friday, February 17, 2012

I keep reading about Copenhagen and thinking what a truly stylish city it is. Danish design has always been at the forefront ....fashion, furniture, architecture and interiors not to mention the arts.

Hotel 27 is in the centre of the city.....a heartbeat from where it is all at.....both culture and shopping !!

As you know, I have more than a passing interest in hotel guestrooms having spent a large portion of my life as an interior designer working on their design or redesign.  Hotel 27 has the hotel guestroom sorted.  The timber floors underpin the use of colour in the furniture itself... so different to the standard hotel guestroom. So simple, elegant and so well designed.  The colours are gorgeous.....slick, young and fresh. The attention to detail is brilliant.

/images/hotel_twenty_seven_copenhagen_detail.jpg

Hotel 27 has the warmth and comfort factor so often missing in a lot of inner city hotels.  Designers put together a lot of hard finishes and think that opulent furnishings will be the icing on the cake.....so often the spaces may have the initial wow factor but are simply not inviting.

The Danes do timber well.  The use of either timber flooring, panelling or furniture (or all three) creates warmth and gives a space a certain character.

And now for some really vibrant Danish design.....iconic furniture combined with gorgeous fabrics for the Bar....only in Copenhagen !!

India Hicks Summer Inspiration

Deirdre Brennan - Monday, January 09, 2012

There is something very Queensland about the architecture and in particular the interiors that India Hicks and her husband have created on their Caribbean Island.

The wide verandahs, the tongue and groove boarding.....everywhere ....and beautiful fretwork over doorways...that tropical climate....all designed to capture the breeze!!!

The colour palette so crisp...black and white with shades of sand and driftwood.

The turquoise ocean, lush vegetation and vibrant flower blossoms shining like jewels.

Having grown up in Queensland I now see it all through fresh eyes.  Why is it that you appreciate it so much more when you go back!!!!! The frangipani and bougainvillea seem so much more exotic.....the architecture more interesting!!!!

Having said all that ....I adore India Hicks style.  I could happily book a holiday to any one of her houses on this beautiful island.

Ilse Crawford Style Personified

Deirdre Brennan - Thursday, December 15, 2011

Kranzbach Hotel by Studioilse

Not only is this a magnificent photograph but I know you will enjoy reading about this amazing Designer and looking at her other work.  I can pick her work in a minute.  It is pared back, somewhat Scandanavian and always edgy...opulent, there really are not enough words to describe!!

Stylish London Hotel takes Inspiration from the Pin Stripe Suit

Deirdre Brennan - Wednesday, December 07, 2011

Eccleston Square Hotel, London

Wallpaper Magazine has listed it's Editors Top Hotels for travel.  This look I adore!!!

There is something very slick about simple grey (or shades of grey) and crisp white. The bedcover reminicent of the pin stripe suit and the drapes look very much like grey flannel to me.

Neutral Palette for 5 Star Hotel Guestroom Patagonia

Deirdre Brennan - Friday, December 02, 2011

Wallpaper Magazine Editors Travel Picks - Patagonia, Chile

You may well think I am hooked on the neutral palette given yesterdays fashion post from the Sartorialist.  Those of you who know me also know that neutral is my great love in  life, both fashion and home.  When I do venture into 'colour', people comment.  It is very out of character for me.

I do adore this guestroom.  I have spent many years designing hotel guestrooms....most of which do not have this view!!!  I could see this working somewhere like Lake Jindabyne.

It is very sometimes difficult to convince hotel groups - the words are simplicity and elegance and yes !! a neutral palette. Some even still insist on 'dressing' the bed.....what could look more divine than this crisp white bedlinen....and hotels have the capacity to have it crisp!!!  I strive for this ....however never achieve this level of crispness.

I will share more of these beautiful hotels with you over the next few days.
