My Design Weekends

bowral weekends ... the new design hub

Bowral in the Southern Highlands now has its very own 'design hub'. The once neglected bottom end of town is becoming ever so fashionable. My favourite ... rabbit trap timber, has a new, larger home that shows off their gorgeous rustic yet contemporary style to perfection.

Full of recycled and environmentally friendly pieces, the design aesthetic is very much of the moment but with its own unique stamp. Such an interesting mix of beautifully designed furniture and homewares ... and found objects.

I feel I need to keep an eye on the changing scene at rabbit trap timber but look forward to exploring this end of town further next weekend.  In the meantime ... back to Sydney !!!

my gorgeous lunch with gervasoni

I am sharing images of my favourite pieces of Gervasoni furniture, above and below.  I had the pleasure of meeting Michele Gervasoni last weekend at a gorgeous lunch overlooking Balmoral Beach ... a sunny winter's afternoon ... perfection.

It was interesting to hear how he and his brother, the third generation to manage this beautiful Italian furniture company, have expanded their market so enormously ... and without any compromise. Their passion for attention to detail and use of natural materials always the hallmark of Gervasoni products.

The fabulous Gervasoni website is a must and their collection extensive.  It is available in Sydney through Anibou.

stylish baroque flowers in bowral, southern highlands

Deirdre Brennan - Sunday, November 11, 2012

Oh what a joy to have such a divine little shop in the Southern Highlands. Once renowned for all things stylish and smart the beautiful Highlands has had little to offer in the way of boutique shopping of late.

/images/baroque_flowers_2.png

The Southern Highlands has seen the likes of Belinda Seper, Peter Chadwick, Jan Weekes and many others, open wonderfully stylish shops ... sadly, no longer. This is the sort of boutique shopping that Sydneysiders with weekenders in the Highlands, crave.

/images/baroque_flowers_3.png

Anyhow, back to Baroque Flowers ... it isn't all about flowers ... the shop is full of decorative items such as urns, baskets, glassware and one off antique furniture pieces that compliment the flowers .... and draw you through the door.

/images/baroque_flowers_4.jpg

Vanessa is a very clever florist/stylist who creates not only fabulous flowers but beautiful vignettes within this tiny space.  She puts together unusual combinations of flowers and foliage, both strikingly bold and pretty, rustic and classic.  There is always a surprise element.

Amangalla ..... gracious elegance

Deirdre Brennan - Sunday, June 17, 2012

Another wet weekend indoors .... the bonus being the time it has allowed me to peruse my inbox in slightly more detail than normal.  In the process I was delighted to find that the latest Habitus Living online magazine had arrived. It's images of Sri Lanka's Amangalla I thought worth sharing.

/images/amangalla_1.jpg

I quickly became lost in the world of Old Ceylon and the grandeur of this retreat ... so very Aman.

/images/amangalla_2.jpg

Dating back to the 1600's these grand old structures have had a number of incarnations .... the New Orient Hotel, an icon in Galle and the hub for passengers from the P&O and Dutch East India Company vessels. In another life .... the Dutch governor's residence and army barracks.

/images/amangalla_3.jpg

The current Amangalla retreat captures it all .... large timber shutters on windows, wide timber floor boards, huge chandeliers hanging from the 6 metre ceilings, cord pull lights and the most fabulous and interesting solid timber furniture !!  They certainly have captured an era .... so pared back and yet so elegant. My favourite pieces .... the gorgeous wicker recliners !!

/images/amangalla_4.jpg

They could so easily have thrown masses of colour into the interior .... very brave not to .... the vision being 'to allow the centuries-seasoned building's soul to shine'.

/images/amangalla_5.jpg

I have always had a fascination with Sri Lanka .... just to explore the different regions.... the beaches, the tea plantations .... and maybe even a visit to Amangalla.

rustic twig furniture by Joe Vinks to suit any design style

Deirdre Brennan - Tuesday, February 14, 2012

/images/joe_vinks_table.jpg

I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Vinks and browsing amongst his beautiful pieces some time ago.....in a rustic tin shed in the Southern Highlands.....much to my surprise.....a very stylish setting as I recall.  I have since seen his pieces looking magnificent in a number of different interiors.....some rustic others rather more formal.

These pieces seem to work anywhere .... in edgy inner city apartments, English country house interiors or beachhouses !!!

I think what makes this furniture so versatile is that it can be stained, waxed or painted to achieve the desired look or fit in with the overall feel of the interior.

I love the silhouette of the twigs against a backdrop when painted white or black but equally there is something just so soft about the aged patina of the natural wood.....some of it the bleached colour of driftwood.
