christmas in paris ..

Christmas in Paris .. understated elegance but somehow underwhelming after London. Then again, Paris is beautiful without the decorations.

hotel lancaster paris, still my favourite ... for the moment

Deirdre Brennan - Thursday, November 27, 2014
/images/hotel_lancaster_paris_8.jpg

My favourite hotel in Paris has always been the very stylish Hotel Lancaster. Interestingly, at the moment, two of the most iconic and glamorous hotels in Paris, The Ritz and Hotel de Crillon, are closed for renovation.

/images/hotel_lancaster_paris_6.jpg

The Hotel Lancaster is all about pared back elegance ..

/images/hotel_lancaster_paris_5.jpg

a sophisticated, muted colour palette ..

/images/hotel_lancaster_paris_3.jpg

its artwork, chandeliers and Louis XV and XVI furniture ..

/images/hotel_lancster_paris_9.jpg

and of course .. has something for everyone.

Beautiful hotels in Paris, particularly at this time of the year, are for slipping into for a hot chocolate and luxuriating.  If you are checking in .. all the better.  I can't wait for the grand openings of The Ritz and Hotel de Crillon.

loving london's boutique hôtels 2014

/images/the_pelham_london_7.jpg

The Pelham Hotel in Sth Kensington is, for me the perfect location in London.  A short stroll to the V&A or along the gorgeous Walton Street to Harrods ... more specifically, their Stationary Department.

/images/the_pelham_london_3.jpg

Kit Kemp the designer has created a luxury town house style hotel, the interiors 'a tailored version of grand English style'.  I love the idea of individually designed bedrooms, and there are 52 to choose from.

/images/the_pelham_london_2.jpg

What sets these hotels apart is the unexpected ... the combination of antique and contemporary furniture ... quirky lighting and modern art set within a a wood panelled drawing room or library ... it is perfect.

hotel guestrooms with a difference... the siam, bangkok

Deirdre Brennan - Saturday, April 20, 2013

/images/the_siam_1.jpg

Without doubt it is the individuality of The Siam that sets it apart.  Renowned hotel designer Bill Bensley has incorporated the old with the new and created a unique 5 star hotel, full of charm.

/images/the_siam_2.jpg

This is not your typical hotel guestroom ... with Thai Colonial influences, lamps hanging on black silk ribbons, travel collections ... all so very personal.

/images/the_siam_3.jpg

The elegance of suites with sumptuous furnishings, exquisite detailing and such interesting memorabilia.

/images/the_siam_4.jpg

Memorabilia that has been collected and sourced for each of the individually themed suites.

/images/the_siam_5.jpg

Always glimpses to the exotic orchid filled gardens ...

/images/the_siam_6.jpg

Black and white and distinctly Art Deco.  Such attention to detail.

/images/the_siam_7.jpg

I ask the question again, why can't your average hotel guestroom, or even just the expensive ones, be that little bit more exciting or individual.  It isn't only about the finishes and furnishings ... it is about creating spaces that make patrons feel at home or somewhere better than home.

loving the langham, london

Deirdre Brennan - Sunday, December 30, 2012

/images/langham_1.jpg

The Langham Hotel, London ... just a short stroll from Oxford Street, Regent Street and Marylebone High Street ... shops, shops and more shops. This is a very stylish hotel in a fabulous location.

/images/langham_2.jpg

Classic Room

I love the warmth and attention to detail in all the rooms ... from the entry level Classic Rooms to Grand Junior Suite.  There are of course larger suites, however I simply can't imagine needing anything larger than the gorgeous Grand Junior suite ... particularly when you are out and about shopping and exploring all day.

/images/langham_3.jpg

Grand Junior Suite

I think what I love most is the interesting use of colour throughout ... both elegant and adventurous, to say the least. I don't know why all hotels don't do doona's/duvet's ... they are just so inviting.  Well actually I do know why.  Changing covers still remains a nightmare for housemaids. (Have to say I find it a challenge and only have a couple to do at any one time.)

/images/langham_4.jpg

Artesian

Lovely to know there is the traditional Palm Court to return to for Tea after all that shopping ... or the Artesian for a cocktail before dinner.  I do love the exotic Orientalism !!!

A stay at The Langham would not be complete without a stroll through Regent's Park or a visit to the Wallace Collection (also fabulous Tearoom).

london olympic luxury

Deirdre Brennan - Saturday, July 28, 2012

/images/firmdale_dorset_square_hotel_1.jpg

I am sitting here in Sydney full of Olympic Spirit .... no not in London !!! Tickets scarce and crowds crazy, so very happy to travel when London returns to normal. However should I be over there, I have decided that the Firmdale Hotel Group do have the most exciting properties to choose from .... and in all the right locations .... Covent Garden, Haymarket, Soho, Knightsbridge, South Kensington and my favourite Dorset Square.  What could be more divine than this Regency terrace overlooking a leafy square.

/images/firmdale_dorset_square_hotel.jpg

Kit Kemp loves colour and plays with fabric in a very adventurous way.  Each property is unique ... in fact, each guestroom is unique, from what I can see. She combines slick contemporary with traditional pieces and details, very brave indeed.

/images/firmdale_covent_garden_hotel.jpg

Firmdale call it 'fresh contemporary English style".  I have to say that I have not always been sure that it all works but looking at the newest addition in Dorset Square I have been won over.  Either my taste has changed or I have taken time to 'just get it'.

/images/firmdale_haymarket_hotel.jpg

I acknowledge they are quirky, however the attention to detail is exceptional, the furniture and furnishings are beautiful and I am sure the experience would be pure 5 star.

Dorset Square is where I would be staying ... just a short walk to Marylebone High Street, an area I love with its gorgeous shops and cafes ... oh so civilised compared to the rat race of Oxford Street not so far away.

Would love some feedback on any of the Firmdale properties ....

fortnum and mason diamond jubilee tea salon

Deirdre Brennan - Saturday, June 30, 2012

/images/fortnum_and_mason_jubilee%20tea.gif

Very exciting to discover the refurbished Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon at Fortnum and Mason.

Designer David Collins has created a beautiful environment to sip tea or bubbly and enjoy the delicacies .... a tradition synonymous with Fortnum's.

Since the opening up of the Far East for trade from the west, Fortnum and Mason have sourced the finest teas .... making a choice is the difficulty.

images/fortnum_and_mason-jubilee_tea

The fourth floor was always home to the St James restaurant ... now one can enjoy the elegant Georgian surroundings of the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon.

Tea will arrive at your table with a timer that will ring once to indicate that it has reached the perfect brewing time !! and accompanied by the perfect delicate sandwiches and cakes .... linger and enjoy.

claridge's .... a very british residence

Deirdre Brennan - Wednesday, May 23, 2012

/images/Claridges-Entrance_blog%5B1%5D.jpg

We all think of afternoon tea when we hear the name Claridge's, however I was fascinated to learn more of the history of this favourite London icon while reading one of my favourite blogs ..... from Mulberry.

/images/Claridges-Front-Hall_blog%5B1%5D.jpg

Mulberry, another British icon known for its luxurious fashion and leather goods, chose Claridge's for the fifth time to host its Autumn/Winter 2012 show during London Fashion Week.

As part of sharing this experience with its readers Mulberry asked Claridge's about its history and for any interesting facts about the hotel.

I hope you enjoy these snippets about Claridge's as much as I did.  It will make it all the more meaningful when next you meet there for afternoon tea.

PS.  There is something terribly smart about black and white floors whether they be tile or marble, large or small .... and the entrance at Claridge's .... just so glamorous !!!

the word from the milan furniture fair 2012 via Gervasoni

Deirdre Brennan - Monday, May 14, 2012

/images/gervasoni_inout_range.jpg

I was thrilled to chat with Jenny Gill, Australian agent for the fabulous Gervasoni furniture, on her return from the Milan Furniture Fair. This is the word from Milan.

What were the trends and future direction in furniture seen in Milan ?

loose covers, lots of timber furniture, 'big' sofas, the new 'big look' for most furniture, shiny fabrics, flokati style rugs and long pile carpet in general, over sized/exaggerated pendant lighting

What were the colours shown for the new season ?

orange, purple, grey and soft grey/green

Which range proved to be particularly popular at the Fair for Gervasoni ?

inout range which is modular furniture for outdoor use and upholstered in waterproof removable covers

Apart from the Gervasoni range, which collection had an impact ?

Minotti's large furniture range

What are your tips for a visit to Milan for the Furniture Fair ?

it is a distinct advantage to be as close to the centre as possible, near the Duomo and furniture showrooms

Can you recommend a hotel in Milan that you have stayed at ?

the NH President, Milan is where I stayed this trip and it is terrific (4 star)

Any fabulous cafe's you can recommend ?

bar erri, via durine near hotel

Do you have a final tip for visitors to the Fair ?

a must .... visiting the area where the new designers not able to afford the Fair exhibit ..... Zona Tortona

liberty london sheer opulence

Deirdre Brennan - Sunday, January 29, 2012

/images/liberty_london_bedside_table.jpg

Liberty London is unique when it comes to nearly everything in the store !!! Such an Aladdin's Cave.  This bedside table is covered in the most beautiful velvet.

Such a divine concept.....and other furniture in the collection as well.  Who ever thought velvet would even be available in such cute patterns and colours.

I can't seem to find out the origin or designer of this range however will be on the case.  More images from Liberty tomorrow.....it is without a doubt my favourite store !!!
